Painted relief carving

'Deeper' is also a painting on a carved surface, a unique technique Markus has developed, using wooden boards and household paints. He carves into the surface of the board to create form, texture and movement. Then he uses ordinary household paints to give it colours and a mood. Finally the surface gets sanded and sometimes he applies a mat varnish in order to bring out the more vibrant aspects of certain colours. Markus does not paint ideas from his head, but arrives at the finished artwork through a kind of three-way communication between the material - often secondhand, previously used boards - his own life experience and an external inspiration that is sometimes there at the outset and sometimes comes later, anywhere along the creative process. In a way this is a back to front approach in that it deals with the details at the beginning rather than at the end. Markus feels that this process helps to keep his perfectionist tendencies in check, that would otherwise tend to go too far into the details at the end. This way the details don't get in the way of spontaneous expression but become one with it.
This particular composition is all about layers and their relative depths. It attempts to evoke rather than to represent anything in particular. The whole piece is dominated by orange and blue, Markus' favourite pair of complementary colours, representing the relationships between energy and space, warmth and cold or fire and water.
