Embroidery has a rich history. Tissue paper is transformed with machine embroidery and quality pigments. They are very fragile until they have received a coat of shellac varnish leaving the surface ready for gilding with Gold Leaf. The feathers are hand stitched onto a backing paper of heavy watercolour paper.
Swan flight feathers are light and very strong. Each feather supports is neighbouring feather and collectively creates uplift and power to the wings. A bird cannot fly easily if one of the flight feathers becomes damaged. The wing is a sum of the parts.

A series of work centred around the Bewick Swan was made at the WWT Slimbridge Wetland Centre and in the Studio. Running parallel to this study, was an investigation into the gold work and the egg tempera paintings of the early Renaissance, particularly the work of Duccio and Giotto. Their handling of pigments and gold work is very interesting and remarkable for colour combinations, subject matter and composition. The feathers are hand stitched onto a backing paper of Fabriano Artistico hot press watercolour paper.
