Collection: Essential
Bannatynes Spa Hotel (map)
Essential implies belonging to the very nature of a thing.
This exhibition focuses on the essential nature of creativity. Creativity has traditionally been defined as the ability to respond adaptively and the ability to bring something new and valuable into existence purposefully.
All three artists in this exhibition have responded creatively to traditional media in order to produce something unexpected.
David Winston
David has sought ways to work both with and beyond the constraints of modern digital imagery. This has led him to both look back to the earliest photographic processes and also develop his own alternative ways of producing a photographic image:
'The two major elements of magic and emotion are the driving forces behind my photography. The camera is a completely objective observer, simply recording everything the lens sees, rather than filtering it through our individual human perceptions. My use of alternative and experimental photo processes allows me to work with the more painterly aspects of photography-- to portray what I see in a more subjective way, a captured moment, or a quality of light-- to create a photograph that tells a story and engages our imagination.’
David's work displays the detached, watchful eye of the outsider, evidenced in his evocative and atmospheric images.
Shelley Rose
Shelley creates still life compositions, using modern technology to create classical imagery and artwork. The play with illusionary elements like unconventional lighting, forced perspective and juxtaposed objects characterises the work. This results in everyday objects taking on an intriguing and surreal ambience.
Edith Barton
Edith creates objects and paintings which reflect her unique interpretation of reality grounded as they are in her own deeply held cultural beliefs and biases.
Each painting and sculpture is a heart-felt response to the world that is not overthought or intellectual. There is honesty and openness in her work that connects with people on a profound level. This is especially true of her textile sculptures as shown in this exhibition, whose figurative forms inhabit the space between human and other, inviting the viewer to invest them with personal significance and meaning.
