Paper textile

Swan flight feathers are light and very strong. Each feather supports is neighbouring feather and collectively creates uplift and power to the wings. A bird cannot fly easily if one of the flight feathers becomes damaged. The wing is a sum of the parts.

Embroidery has a rich history, here, tissue paper is transformed with machine embroidery and painted. They are very fragile until they have received a coat of shellac varnish leaving the surface ready for gilding with Gold Leaf.

A series of work centred around the Bewick Swan was made at the WWT Slimbridge Wetland Centre and in the Studio. Running parallel to this study, was an investigation into the gold work and the egg tempera paintings of the early Renaissance, particularly the work of Duccio and Giotto. Their handling of pigments and gold work is very interesting and remarkable for colour combinations, subject matter and composition. I received tutoring in the calligraphic skills of using gold leaf – and this was transferable to the paper textiles.

Although photographed on black to highlight the colours, they are framed using a background of an off-white paper.
The feathers are hand stitched onto a backing paper of Fabriano Artistico hot press watercolour paper.
